Impediments to mixing classical and quantum dynamics

چکیده
The dynamics of systems composed of a classical sector plus a quantum sector is studied. We show that, even in the simplest cases, ~i! the existence of a consistent canonical description for such mixed systems is incompatible with very basic requirements related to the time evolution of the two sectors when they are decoupled, ~ii! the classical sector cannot inherit quantum fluctuations from the quantum sector, and ~iii! a coupling among the two sectors is incompatible with the requirement of physical positivity of the theory, i.e., there would be positive observables with a nonpositive expectation value. @S1050-2947~99!05508-0#

The dynamics of systems composed of a classical sector plus a quantum sector is studied. We show that, even in the simplest cases, (i) the existence of a consistent canonical description for such mixed systems is incompatible with very basic requirements related to the time evolution of the two sectors when they are decoupled. (ii) The classical sector cannot inherit quantum fluctuations from t...
متن کاملOn Strictly Weak Mixing C-dynamical Systems and a Weighted Ergodic Theorem
Recently, the investigation of the ergodic properties of quantum dynamical systems had a considerable growth. Since the theory of quantum dynamical systems provides convenient mathematical description of the irreversible dynamics of an open quantum system (see [9], sec.4.3, [31],[27]). In this setting, the matter is more complicated than in the classical case. Some differences between classical...
متن کاملComplete characterization of mixing time for the continuous quantum walk on the hypercube with markovian decoherence model
The n-dimensional hypercube quantum random walk (QRW) is a particularily appealing example of a quantum walk because it has a natural implementation on a register on n qubits. However, any real implementation will encounter decoherence effects due to interactions with uncontrollable degrees of freedom. We present a complete characterization of the mixing properties of the hypercube QRW under a ...
متن کاملParabolic maps with spin: Generic spectral statistics with non-mixing classical limit
We investigate quantised maps of the torus whose classical analogues are ergodic but not mixing. Their quantum spectral statistics shows non-generic behaviour, i. e. it does not follow random matrix theory (RMT). By coupling the map to a spin 1/2, which corresponds to changing the quantisation without altering the classical limit of the dynamics on the torus, we numerically observe a transition...
متن کاملMixing and decoherence in continuous-time quantum walks on cycles
We prove analytical results showing that decoherence can be useful for mixing time in a continuous-time quantum walk on finite cycles. This complements the numerical observations by Kendon and Tregenna (Physical Review A 67 (2003), 042315) of a similar phenomenon for discrete-time quantum walks. Our analytical treatment of continuous-time quantum walks includes a continuous monitoring of all ve...
